Chilling Remarks on Education from CPAC

Better yet titled, “Why Republicans Scare me, Part I.”

As a college student, one of the public policy issues that concerns me most is education. In the past four years, I’ve personally witnessed and have been affected by the continuous budget cuts that fund public education in our nation; every year my tuition has increased by a considerable margin. And as I was looking over news coverage of the Conservative Political Action Conference, one particular comment popped out at me.

Rand Paul, supposed “winner” of the CPAC with the highest approval rating, made this comment:

This month I will propose a five year balanced budget. My budget eliminates the Department of Education. (Source)

This remark was then followed by a solid 10 seconds of applause from the audience. He is in favor of getting rid of the federal department responsible for the coordination of education so that each state can determine its own curriculum (and provide its own funding, I might add). Am I the only one that thinks that this is a terrible idea?
